You Do Not Need a Travel Partner to Do This

Solo travel in Sri Lanka is easy, safe, and increasingly popular. But most safari camps and lodges are priced for two. Double occupancy. Couple-centric marketing. Solo supplements that punish you for travelling alone.

Camp Leopard works differently. Our Yala Hideout package is designed from the ground up for independent travellers. It runs on selected dates throughout the season, grouping solo bookings together so that the campfire has critical mass, the jeep costs are shared, and nobody spends an evening eating dinner alone in a tent.

This is not a group tour. There is no itinerary packet, no tour leader with a flag, and no matching T-shirts. It is a collection of independent travellers who happen to be at camp on the same night. You share the campfire, the meals, and the safari vehicle. Everything else, your tent, your bathroom, your schedule between drives, is private.

Yala Hideout — $192 per person

1 Night, 2 Safaris, Selected Dates

The Yala Hideout is one night, two safari drives, and full board. It is the complete Camp Leopard experience compressed into the shortest possible timeframe.

  • 1 night in a private AC tent with ensuite bathroom
  • 2 safari drives: dusk (Day 1, Block 5) + dawn (Day 2, Block 1 or Block 5)
  • Full board: arrival lunch, campfire dinner, packed safari breakfast, departure brunch
  • Campfire experience with fellow travellers
  • Air conditioning, ensuite bathroom, private veranda
  • Free WiFi

Private upgrade: +$30 per night. If you want a dedicated jeep on your safari drives rather than sharing with other guests, the private upgrade gives you a vehicle and ranger to yourself. Everything else remains the same.

Before and After Yala

Most solo travellers are moving through Sri Lanka on a multi-stop itinerary. Here is how Yala connects to the most popular routes.

Ella — 2 hours north

The hill country town that every backpacker visits. Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, the famous Ella-Kandy train, and a café scene that rivals anything in Southeast Asia. Most solo travellers do Ella before Yala, arriving from the highlands and descending to the dry lowlands. The drive is stunning: tea plantations, waterfalls, and hairpin bends through the mountains.

Tangalle — 1.5 hours west

A quieter beach alternative on the southern coast. Less developed and less crowded than Mirissa or Unawatuna. Good surf, empty stretches of sand, and seafood restaurants on the beach. Two or three nights in Tangalle after a safari is a popular solo itinerary: adrenaline followed by decompression.

Arugam Bay — 2.5 to 3 hours east

Sri Lanka's east coast surf town. A strong solo traveller community, surf camps, beach bars, and a laid-back atmosphere that is hard to leave. The drive from Yala to Arugam Bay passes through the B35 elephant corridor and the town of Pottuvil. It is one of the most wildlife-rich road journeys on the island. Arugam Bay is seasonal (best April to October), so check conditions before heading east.

We can arrange onward transport from Camp Leopard to any of these destinations. Our meeting point in Kataragama is well-connected, and we work with local drivers who know the routes, the road conditions, and the shortcuts that Google Maps does not.

A Note on Safety

Sri Lanka is one of the safest countries in Asia for solo travel, including for women travelling alone. Crime against tourists is extremely rare. People are friendly, often going out of their way to help. English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Public transport is cheap and functional.

One practical tip: do not follow Google Maps blindly in rural Sri Lanka. The app regularly routes vehicles down unpaved farm tracks, through villages with roads too narrow for a car, or along routes that exist on a map but are not maintained on the ground. If a local tells you to take a different route, take the different route. They know the roads. Google does not.
